Reading Police announced Oct. 30 that officers will again wear special patches throughout November in honor of Veterans Day.

The patches support Home Base, an organization dedicated to helping veterans and their families. Officers who are veterans will wear patches representing the military branch they served in, including the Army, Navy, Marine Corps, Coast Guard and Air Force. Dispatchers and other civilian department members will wear special T-shirts in support of the fundraiser.

The department called the effort "this annual tradition" that "lets officers show support for veterans and the sacrifices they have made for our country."

The department is also selling veteran patches for $10 each. Residents who want a patch can send proof of donation through the Reading Police Department page on Home Base's website, or mail a check made out to Home Base along with a self-addressed envelope to the Reading Police Department, 15 Union St., Reading, MA 01867, attention Community Service Officer DaLonn Pearson. Officer Pearson will mail the patch or patches back to those who request them.

Home Base is a nonprofit that provides clinical care, wellness programs, education and research for veterans and their families. Since 2009, it has served more than 35,000 veterans and family members and trained more than 85,000 clinicians nationwide.
