READING — The Reading Library Board warned that a failed override could cut operating hours and state aid. Trustees voted 5-0, with Trustee Pat absent, to approve the Reading Public Library as a collection site for the Metro Boston Diaper Drive through October 17 and for the annual Toys for Tots drive. The library's director said a no-override fiscal 2028 budget would cut spending 8 to 9 percent, drop operating hours from 60 to 54 a week, and trigger an immediate 12.5 percent cut to roughly $65,000 to $66,000 in annual state aid.
"Instead with the override, they're going to be asking us to cut closer to $200,000," the director said, versus a roughly $50,000 to $60,000 increase needed without one. Head of Collection Services Amy Penny reported digital licensing costs running about $100,000, with some audiobook licenses costing "a hundred and something dollars for a year." Trustees also reviewed collection-policy changes required by a new state law signed by Gov. Maura Healey and a restructured meeting-room fee schedule, both set for a vote November 10.
