Reading Voters to Decide FY28 Override on Nov. 3 Ballot

READING — Reading residents will vote on a fiscal 2028 operational override on the Nov. 3 state election ballot, Town Hall announced this week, a decision that could determine funding levels for town and school services for years to come.

TOWN HALL

An operational override for fiscal year 2028, which begins July 1, 2027, will go before Reading voters on the Nov. 3 state election ballot, Town Hall said this week. The town has launched an FY28 Override Hub with details on the ballot question for residents weighing the vote.

Town Manager Jayne Wellman's July monthly report, her second since taking office, offers a detailed look at what happened across Reading during the month, according to Town Hall. Wellman also hosts "Reading Between the Lines," a new podcast from Town Hall and RCTV; its latest episode covers changes to the town's rubbish and recycling program.

Elsewhere at Town Hall, officials say progress continues at the Reading Center for Active Living, known as ReCAL, and the East Middlesex Mosquito Control Project is running a truck-mounted aerosol sprayer through the summer to control local mosquito populations.

SCHOOLS

Reading Public Schools has posted a Proposition 2½ override summary for fiscal year 2028 on its website, tying the district's budget picture to the townwide ballot question voters will decide in November. Superintendent Turner continues to lead the district as work continues on the Killam School Building Project.

Two school-related panels meet Monday, Aug. 17: the School Committee's Facility Naming Advisory Committee and the Killam School Building Committee.
