Reading School Committee pressed administrators on stagnant MCAS scores and adopted evaluation benchmarks for new Superintendent Turner, a week before a town override vote. Dr. Hardy reported 62 percent of grades three-through-eight students met or exceeded expectations on the ELA MCAS and 65 percent in math, with growth percentiles of 51 and 54.
Member Thomas Wise said he "can't support celebrating 62s and 63s and 64 answers," noting Reading ranks 18th among peer districts in per-pupil spending but seventh to 13th in achievement. Chair Shawn Brandt added, "I don't think we can ignore the impact of resource levels." The committee voted 6-0 to accept the district's elementary, middle and high school improvement plans and 6-0 to adopt seven focus indicators for Turner's first-year evaluation. Staff also flagged a $90,000 unbudgeted tuition increase for one out-of-district special education program, with up to $170,000 more possibly at risk.
