READING — The Reading School Committee heard that lower-than-expected Killam Elementary School construction bids will cut the town's borrowing by roughly $21 million to $22 million, more than 25 percent below the $85 million projection, member Lara Durgavich reported. New Superintendent Dr. Turner, six days into the job, previewed his entry plan and reported nearly 200 survey responses so far.
Member Thomas Wise said the Select Board must set a Proposition 2½ override amount by August 4, with Finance Committee discussions pointing to a range of $7.5 million to $14 million, including $917,000 needed just to maintain level school services. "There is no way that an override is going to pass without sufficient detail," Wise said. The committee voted 6-0 to waive a first reading of its wellness policy and 6-0 to set a one-year superintendent review cycle, with a formative review in February and a summative review in June, but took no vote on the override or on a renewed bid for approval from the Mulberry Forest School.
