READING — The Reading School Committee voted 5-0 to approve year-end budget transfers and new entry-plan goals for incoming Superintendent Turner, while bracing for possible deep cuts if a November override fails. The district closed fiscal 2026 with $1,027,927 available, finance staffer Phil reported, including $827,000 prepaid toward out-of-district special education tuition and $300,000 for a technology refresh. Member Erin Gaffen voted for Turner's goals but said "I have a really hard time with looking at this in terms of what success looks like," pushing for measurable targets next year.

The committee tabled new Protect Act student-records procedures after Chair Shawn Brandt flagged conflicts with state regulation 603 CMR 23 on directory-information disclosure. Administrators warned that publicized position-cut estimates tied to the override are rough averages that "could certainly be higher," and the board asked staff to draft a fuller menu of cut scenarios, including high school class-size impacts, before a possible January budget revote.
