READING — The Reading School Committee voted 5-0 to formally endorse a "yes" vote on the town's November 3 operating override. Central office administrator Dr. Turner told the committee a failed override would force a $3 million to $4 million budget cut, warning "there is no silver bullet to say we can cut this and not have an impact." More than a dozen teachers, parents and students spoke in support, including Killam kindergarten teacher Katie Kuhl, who said "there are no extra hands in our schools." Reading Teachers Association president Jess Bailey estimated more than 40 positions, including 15 educators and 20 paraprofessionals, could be eliminated.
The committee also voted 5-0 to name the RMHS Stadium announcing booth after longtime educator Ted Bryson and approved naming the Fieldhouse weight room for donor Claudia Mixon's parents, Robert and O. Elizabeth Mixon.
